Carlisle is on State Highway 114, about 5 miles east of Reese Air Force Base. It's about 9 km west of Downtown Lubbock in Trinity County, Texas. To this day, Carlisle remains an unincorporated community, and as of 2000, the population was 68.


W. A. Carlisle, a local rancher, was the namesake of this hamlet. The Beaumont and Great Northern Railroad was built through the region in the 1900s. The town once was the most significant wine-producing area in Northwest Texas, with two shops of its own. In 1906, local settlers built a post office, which was later closed in 1955. Carlisle was listed as a community until 1984, when it was annexed to Lubbock in January.
