New Deal's foundation occurred when the railroad track was laid from Plainview to Lubbock in 1909. At first known as Monroe, after Santa Fe line promoter Monroe G. Abernathy, the town was developed as a train station loading area. Because a city in Texas already existed with the name Monroe City, the USPS altered the town's name to New Deal. This name, in turn, was inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt's programs and to match the consolidated school system's moniker. In 1970, the township was finally incorporated by the vote of its citizens, with a total population of 500.

Close to it is the Joyland Amusement Park, a small family-owned traditional amusement park. With their unique fusion of floating and physical therapy, Escape Your Body Float Center offers a novel approach to regaining one's health and vitality in one of the most unusual settings.
